This year I began what I thought would be a simple evening project. I was quickly proved wrong when cutting out, ironing and stitiching 25 little red pockets. It was a loooong night!

Happy Birthday Mom!
Happy birthday to my Mom! (Better known as Grandma these days) :)
God has truly blessed me with a wonderful Mom.
I am realizing this more and more each day.
I realize now the many sacrifices you have made for us, the unconditional love you have given to us, and what an amazing woman you are.
Thank you, we love you and Happy Birthday!!!

Crunch it Mommy
I never realized how young 'quirks' turn up in our personality. Things that drive us crazy, things that have to be done for the world to be right.
I always thought these things were learned, like flipping through a magazine starting from the back rather than the front. I looked at magazines with my grandmother this way for years. In fact both my sister and I look at magazines this way even today.
I realized a specific behavior of Annaka while at the grocery store. We had brought along a little cup of chocolate cereal for her to sit in the back of the cart and eat. Keeps her occupied so I can get what we need and get out. Anyway, she dropped one and immediately, almost franticly, told me her idea of what I was supposed to do with it.
A: "crunch it Mommy"
Me: What?
A: "Step on it Mommy!, Crunch it."
Me: We cant step on it, that will make a bigger mess.
A: "Oh, you have to crunch it if you drop it Mommy!"
Now I understand why there are scattered messes whenever she eats a snack.
Maybe she got this from me loving to crunch fallen leaves? or....I have no idea.

Thank You Lord for Grandmas
Lord,
Thank you so much for the blessings you allow us to experience in our lifetime. The beginning of October is a special time as we celebrate the birthday of my Grandmother Dorothy.
Even though she is not with us here on earth anymore, I thank you so much for allowing me to have such a wonderful Grandma. She was and is loved by so many...including me along with five other grandkids.
Thank you for her example as a woman who loved and followed after You. Thank you for the memories we have of cutting and pasting with her, having picnics using cassette tapes as food, and painting fingernails together. (and many many many more)
Thank you for the lessons in prayer I have learned from her as she diligently prayed for her family and friends. Thank you for the lessons she taught me of how to be supportive even when you cannot physically be present as she could not go to service with my Grandfather every Sunday but was at home and prayed for every person there (by name!).
Lord, even though we miss her and it hurts that we cannot physically hug her neck, talk to her, and that my daughter will never get to meet her on this earth, I am so thankful that she is no longer suffering physical pain in this worldly body, but that she is rejoicing in you, pain free, in Heaven right now. I know that You plan is perfect and that You choose the time to bring her home to be with You.
Lord, help me to continue to learn from her example to be a better wife, mom and to be an example someday to my grandkids.
Thank you for allowing me to have such an amazing Grandma.
Amen

Loved to pieces
Two different shoes now have been broken in the same way. She loves these shoes so much she wears them whenever we are at home....and even convinced my mom and sister to take her out to dinner wearing them one night in the states.
She not only wears them, she runs in them, climbs in them, jumps in them, etc. They are glued on her feet. One time I even found her taking her nap in them.
The end. RIP Clappy shoe. Another pair will take your place I am sure.

Par-tay at School
Our community is in full holiday swing. Nine nights of celebration beginning with worship to a 'deity' and then hours of dancing around. During holiday season our friends like to dress up in new colorful outfits.
Most schools have religious worship inter-twined with daily activities. That was one reason it was difficult for us to find the right school. We were directed to one that does not involve the religious side of the holidays which gives us an opportunity to help Annaka see they are having a 'special time' but she also knows that we do not celebrate it.
Rather than a celebration for the current holiday the class dressed up and had a dance party the last 30 minutes of class. (No idols present, only fancy dresses and crazy2-4 year olds dancing about the room)
Annaka borrowed an outfit from a friend, I french braided her hair and we were off.
We decided that I will join her class whenever there is one of these 'celebrations' to make sure we know what is going on and so that we can either take Annaka home and/or can talk to her...which means fun pictures!
Well, pretty fun. She was having fun until I got there. Then she cried and cried. She just wanted me to hold her.
I got a couple of pouty faced photos (like the one above) and that was it.

First Day of School
Name that movie....."First day of school. First day of school."
I did not give you that much but that is all that I can remember the actual words that come next. I can just picture that little Nemo jumping on his Papa trying to wake him up for school:)
That line plays in my head every time I take Annaka to school or look at her school pictures.
Annaka's experience was a bit different. First of all she was three months late! School started mid June, which we had planned on being here for. Our U.S. time tables were a bit extended so she had to jump in now.
She got all dressed up, ate her breakfast, put on her backpack (that was only filled with her snack and water) and posed for a few photos.
This went great until....
she realized I would not be coming with her.
Then we had a bit of an emotional few moments. After a little pep talk we were on our way.
We got to the school and she immediately jumped into my arms. After another little pep talk she got down, took off her shoes, put them in her shoe cubby hole, grabbed her teachers hand and marched off. I got a hand flip over her shoulder and a "bye Mom".
I think that very moment was more difficult for me than for her.
p.s. Gotta love the backpack view:)

Things people dont talk about....
Why is it that people tend to not talk about deep matters. It is almost as if we have a book of 'appropriate' answers and comments we are allowed to say to one another.
Why is it when we have a bad day or when we are hurting or struggling we stay silent. Sometimes we need to talk about it. Not only to 'get it out' or to get through it, but to allow others to see the power and strength of the Lord. He allows us to experience these struggles not because we are strong or we can 'handle' it....but because He is strong. Because it is His strength He is glorified.
I am guilty as charged on this matter. Just look at my blog.....photos and daily events. Hmmm, how does this document my 'pilgrimage to motherhood'?
Maybe I am saying that I will post more about the reality of what I am thinking about or doing for the day....even if it does not involve a cute picture of our little three year old....even if it means something that I need help with....even if it means something I am struggling with. Yes, some days it will still just be a picture and a cute story.

Friends here, friends there, friends in between

This is not instead of Tyrone, but along with him. They are friends? I think. Sometimes, not always, they both play with her at the same time.
I am still very confused as to how old they are. This past weekend Annaka notified me that Pirate Jake is going to marry Tyrone's mom.
A taste of whats to come.....
